Ambassador: chance for Latvian entrepreneurs in UK market

Despite the COVID-19 crisis it remains a favorable time for Latvian entrepreneurs in the British market, said Ivita Burmistre, new Latvian ambassador to the former European Union member state the United Kingdom, in an interview to Latvian Radio on July 16.

The ambassador has her first official working day in her new post on Thursday. One of her priorities is promoting economic activity. Burmistre considers it to be a duty for the embassy together with the Latvian Investment and Development Agency to inform and provide measures for entrepreneurs.

The crisis is an opportunity for Latvian businesses, says the ambassador. “I certainly see opportunities for Latvian entrepreneurs to compete with other countries - to enter the British market not only in our traditional export industries, but also new ones. I see a good opportunity for information technology and digital solutions,” Burmistre said.

However the UK and EU are yet to agree on their future trading relationship, adding a strong element of uncertainty to any business deals.

The ambassador also stressed the importance of strengthening cooperation with the UK on defense and security issues.
