Brexit minister pays fleeting visit to Riga

Take note – story published 7 years and 3 months ago

The minister responsible for negotiating the United Kingdom's exit from the European Union paid a visit to Riga June 22, it emerged after the event.

David Davis, Secretary of State (SOS) for exiting the EU met with Latvian Foreign Minister Edgars Rinkevics, a brief news release from the ministry revealed after the meeting had taken place.

Brexit will affect around 100,000 Latvians living in the UK.

However, unlike Davis' previous visit to Latvia on February 21, before the UK gave formal notice that it was quitting the EU, this time around no advance notice of his visit was given and no press conference was held.

The release from the ministry gave no directly attributable quotes from either minister.

The Department for Exiting the EU makes no mention of the visit on its official web page.

On June 19, after meeting with the EU's chief negotiator Michel Barnier in Brussels, Davis said the negotiations between the two parties would be "more transparent than any other negotiation in modern history" and that he would prefer transparent information to leaked information or secret briefings.
