Latvia's reaction to Russia's 'asymmetrical steps' will be stern: Rinkēvičs

Take note – story published 1 year ago

After Russia threatened Latvia with “asymmetric response steps” to the demolition of Soviet monuments, Latvian Foreign Minister Edgars Rinkēvičs (New Unity) said in an interview on Latvian Television's broadcast “Today's Question” November 10 that an adequate and stern response from Latvia would follow any Russian step.

“Since the Russian invasion of Ukraine and the aggression it is carrying out against Ukraine and all those actions we've seen, it's hard to imagine what [steps would be] asymmetric that would be terribly painful for us. Well, let them explain it,” the minister said.

He said that such Russian rhetoric is not intimidating, and Latvia also has steps to offer. “So let them calm down over there,” said Rinkēvičs.

The politician said Latvia had enough claims against the activities of the Russian embassy. He did not give any specific examples.

“We have enough opportunities to react diplomatically if the Russian side decides to carry out some of their antics. There will be no tolerance in this case. Any step they take will be followed by an adequate, stern, and solid response,” said Rinkēvičs.
