Intervija ar KNAB priekšnieku Jēkabu Straumi

No serious pre-election campaign violations so far in Latvia

As the European Parliament elections approach, the Corruption Prevention and Combating Bureau (KNAB) has so far detected 38 pre-election canvassing violations, KNAB Chief Jēkabs Straume told Latvian Television's Morning Panorama on May 10.

38 campaigning violations have been recorded and four administrative processes have been initiated.

“I would say the situation doesn't seem worrying. Very similar to previous election periods, and there has been no serious wrongdoing to worry about until now,“ Straume said.

He confirmed KNAB's readiness to respond and prevent possible violations. He added that it is common – the closer the elections, the more violations.

'We predict the likelihood that in the last few days there may be such wrongdoing that false information is presented through the use of artificial intelligence, campaigning for or against some political force. We will, of course, be prepared to respond,” the KNAB chief said.

European elections in the Member States of the European Union will take place from June 6 to 9. Latvia will hold elections on June 8.

Latvia will have nine deputy seats in the next European Parliament instead of the current eight. 16 parties have applied. You can see an overview of the parties in our two stories – Part 1 here; Part 2 here.
