United List wants change of Latvia's tax service head

The coalition party United List has asked the Finance Minister to replace the head of the State Revenue Service (VID) Ieva Jaunzeme, citing she “has no understanding of how to promote tax payments while helping the economy to live”, the United List said in a media statement on April 3.

Members of the United List faction regularly receive complaints from business organizations about the work of the VID, according to the statement. The party also considers that the VID “does not cope with the reduction of the shadow economy and has serious reputational problems”.

The United List faction met with Finance Minister Arvils Ašeradens (New Unity) and Ieva Jaunzeme on Monday. After the meeting, it was found that “there is a lack of leadership and a comprehensive vision of the necessary changes in the activities of the VID”, said the faction's president, Edgars Tavars.

“By continuing to work in the same spirit as before, it would be impossible to achieve the expected results that would help to make the VID work more efficient, reduce red tape, promote fair competition, and fight with "black and grey tax non-payers". We want structural changes in the VID because we see that the institution needs capital repairs,” Tavars said.

In September 2022, former Minister of Finance Jānis Reirs (New Unity) issued an order regarding the initiation of disciplinary proceedings and the suspension of Jaunzeme for unjustified failure to perform duties, a specific order or task, or delayed, negligent or poor performance. Jaunzeme stayed in office despite the suspension.
