The next Foreign Minister is expected to be confirmed next week. So far, politicians have not been very talkative about the matter. Officially, the name of the possible candidate is still being withheld.
However, LTV has unofficially learned that the current Minister of Justice, Lībiņa-Egnere, could be nominated for the vacant post of Foreign Minister. This was confirmed to LTV by several sources in the party alliance "New Unity".
Lībiņa-Egnere is said to have experience in foreign policy, having led the Latvian delegation to the Council of Europe.
In the event that Lībiņa-Egnere is transferred to the Foreign Minister's chair, New Unity is considering the candidacy of Lauma Paegļkalna, the current Parliamentary Secretary of the Ministry, or Andrejs Judins, the Chairman of the Saeima Legal Affairs Commission, for the vacant position of Minister of Justice.
The post of Foreign Minister will be vacant from April 10, when Krišjānis Kariņš (New Unity) will leave it. The Saeima is scheduled to decide on the appointment of a new Foreign Minister at its meeting on April 11.
