As reported, Mārtiņš Staķis announced his resignation on Monday, July 3.
Wednesday's meeting agenda originally included a draft decision expecting the appointment of Ķirsis until the election of a new mayor. However, Vice Mayor Linda Ozola withdrew her proposal for the appointment of Ķirsis as executor of the mayor's duties. It was originally proposed to appoint Ozola for the role, but this proposal was not considered either.
Instead, the councilors were presented with the opinion of the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Regional Development (VARAM), which indicates that three Vice-Presidents of the City Council have been elected in Rīga, who have the right to agree with each other on who will fulfill the duties of the chair of the City Council.
According to Ķirsis, all three vice-mayors agreed that the role of temporary mayor would be taken by Ķirsis.
The absence of a vote on the draft decision to appoint a performer of the mayor's duties was met with confusion and some dissatisfaction among Members, as expected.
The law provides that a new mayor must be elected within two months.
