PM Kariņš to temporarily take on Foreign Minister's duties

Due to Foreign Minister Edgars Rinkēvičs being elected President of Latvia and his inauguration taking place Saturday, Prime Minister Krišjānis Kariņš (New Unity) will perform the duties of Foreign Minister temporarily, in addition to his existing duties as head of the executive, the Prime Minister's press representative Sandris Sabajevs said.

Kariņš will take over foreign ministerial duties starting Saturday, July 8, following the resignation of Rinkēvičs as Foreign Minister to take presidential office. A special Saeima sitting at 09:00 Saturday will swear him into office.

PM Kariņš will carry the Foreign Minister's portfolio until the approval of a new foreign minister by the Saeima, though as yet no name has officially been put forward for the much-coveted vacancy.
