May party ratings show LPV support rising, United List falling

Opposition parties filled three of the top four places in voters' affections in May, according to the latest SKDS poll for Latvian Television (LTV), but the New Unity party of Prime Minister Krišjānis Kariņš remains the most popular party of all, LTV reported June 7.

If elections were held tomorrow, New Unity (JV) would be the party of choice for 10.8% of voters (down from 11.1% in April).

In second place is the Greens and Farmers Union (ZZS) on 8.9% support (9% in April) and then Latvia In First Place (LPV) on 8.3% (7.8% in April).

Fourth place goes to the Progressives (P) with 6.5% (7.2% in April), ahead of coalition member the National Alliance (NA) with 6.4% (6.2% in April).

In May, the biggest drop in popularity was for the United List (AS) political grouping, which is also part of the currently shaky three-party ruling coalition. Its support fell from 7.7% in April to 5.8% in May.

The only other party to garner more than 5% support in May was For Stability! (S!) with 5.4% (5.3% in April).

As is invariably the case, a large chunk of the electorate declared themselves either undecided (25.2%) or having no intention to vote at all (12.1%).

The independent poll is carried out every month and surveys 1,777 Latvian citizens of voting age.
