Kariņš mulls EU Commissioner's position

In the event of not getting the post of Secretary General of NATO, the Latvian Minister of Foreign Affairs, former Prime Minister Krišjānis Kariņš (New Unity) would like to claim the post of Commissioner of the European Union (EU)

In the “Power Play” broadcast of “Politico”, Kariņš said that if he does not win the post of Secretary-General of NATO, he would not rule out the possibility of returning to Brussels, although he would now claim the post of EU Commissioner.

“Who knows what tomorrow will bring,” the Latvian Foreign Minister said.

Kariņš' party member Valdis Dombrovskis currently holds the post of EU Commissioner. They are both cited as two potential leaders on the European Parliament's election list of the party association New Unity. New Unity is yet to decide which of the two will be the first on the list.

Kariņš has previously expressed his readiness to run for NATO Secretary General.

The current mandate of NATO Secretary General Stoltenberg in this post will expire on October 1, 2024.
