Belarus documentary to feature at Art Doc Fest

A documentary titled "The Accidental President," focusing on the legitimate Belarus president Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya is scheduled for screening in Riga on March 2 at 15:30 at Splendid Palace during the Art Doc Fest.

The film, directed by Mike Lerner and Martin Herring tells how Tsikhanouskaya was thrust onto the international political stage when her husband was arrested for daring to challenge Belarus dictator Alexander Lukashenko for the presidency.

With her husband a political prisoner Sviatlana courageously stepped forward and won the popular vote – but was robbed of her democratic victory by Lukashenko's dictatorial hand on power.

According to the film-makers, "The documentary serves as a compelling opportunity to shed light on Belarus's democratic decision in 2020 and the ongoing struggle for global recognition of that choice. Nearly four years post-election, the regime remains relentless in holding its nation captive. Non-violent protests against Lukashenka, deemed the last European dictator, were ruthlessly suppressed, leaving the internal resistance paralyzed. Thousands are now incarcerated, and those who oppose the regime, including their relatives, face persistent threats of persecution."

You can find more information about the screening here and it will be followed by a Q&A session featuring the Oscar-nominated filmmakers, Mike Lerner and Martin Herring.
