"I think it's very important that we are coming to the decision to supply the million rounds of ammunition that Ukraine needs, but underlying that is our fundamental need to increase European industrial capacity – in defense but not only in defense," Kariņš said.
"Ukraine is fighting for our basic values and we need to make sure that we can supply them with the arms so that they can succeed in this fight," he added.
Europe also needed to "refocus" on the shape and nature of its economy and clarify its stace with regard to China, he told reporters.
EU leaders meet on 23 and 24 March 2023 in Brussels. The meeting is chaired by Charles Michel, President of the European Council and will discuss the latest developments in relation to Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine, competitiveness, single market and the economy, energy, external relations and other topics, including migration.
