Justice Minister says claims against Unity are 'absurd'

The allegations by the head of the IT company SOAAR Renārs Kadžulis that during the 2014 Saeima elections, there have been attempts to falsify election results, are "absurd and undermine the statehood of Latvia", Minister of Justice Inese Lībiņa-Egnere (New Unity) said in an interview on the Latvian Television's morning newscast on April 25.

She repeatedly stated that Kadžulis' allegations were absurd and that she could not comment on their substance.

"Now to name someone just because that person is causing a stir and can thus make headlines is miserable," said Lībiņa-Egnere, repeating that criminal proceedings have been opened against SOAAR.

"I don't want to comment on anything so that it is not used later as an excuse for politicians to make any allegations,"she said.

"How can it be that the company is not able to show the invoices or anything else, there are only public allegations? Why now? There are a lot of questions, but no answers," the minister said.

The Minister stressed that in Latvia the election results are not monitored by the parties and complaints are seen by the courts.

"There is no question of political parties interfering in the elections. Such allegations are absurd and we must make sure that such absurd allegations are not made because this is also inherently undermining our statehood," Lībiņa-Egnere said.

"This genre, whatever you want to call it, of very, very absurd statements can be linked to the pre-election period."

The party is cooperating with law enforcement authorities in the "envelope salary" case, the minister said, an internal investigation has been carried out and the public statements have not been confirmed. "Unity is a party that stands for the rule of law, and in my understanding, this is an attack," she said.
