Parliament might decide on Rēzekne City Council's dissolution

The Ministry of Environmental Protection and Regional Development (VARAM) will assess whether the financial crisis in Rēzekne City is the responsibility of the city mayor, executive, or council deputies, but someone will be held accountable, the Minister Māris Sprindžuks (United List) said in an interview with Latvian Radio on August 28.

As reported earlier by LSM, the municipality of Rēzekne City is in a severe financial situation, with €3.9 million lacking for this year. In order to save funds, the Heads of Authorities and Administrations have made proposals to reduce the number of employees under the responsibility of the local government.

"We need to understand the causes responsible for this situation and then decide who has to assume the actual responsibility - whether it is executive, or the council president, or the whole council, and then it is decided by the Saeima," Sprindžuks said.

The Ministry will devote several weeks or months to the evaluation.

“There's a moral issue here, too. For a ship that is not captained, or for a team that has a virus inside, simply to give money in a bag is immoral. It is important that there is a substantial sorting process. It is important whether the political composition can do this,” the Minister continued.

He criticized the fact that last week a majority of Rēzekne City Council Members rejected the mayor's resignation vote:

"It is that Members still do not recognize errors (…) This situation also makes it possible to decide whether the City Council is able to adequately assess the situation. Therefore, I did not rule out the possibility that it VARAM might decide on the dissolution of this council, because it is total irresponsibility. "

“The city has hit the gas pedal, not really counted on its resources, and budget management is also critical,” the minister said.
