In February, the ruling coalition agreed to begin the dismissal of Rēzekne City Council. This was due to financial difficulties in the municipality, as well as the City Council's long failure to adopt this year's budget. Shortly after this decision, in early March, Rezekne State City Council nevertheless adopted the budget and balanced it. But it was too late. A month has passed, but work on the Draft Law on the dismissal of Rezekne City Council continues.
The dismissal procedure should not be rushed to avoid the risk of litigation before the Constitutional Court. Bērziņa said the bill had already been drafted: "We have in principle got the bill drafted. But we want it also to be justified and to be judged by the Constitutional Court as well. We therefore still want to examine the arguments further. The bill has been drafted and is one of the items on the agenda. I find it hard to name a deadline now. I think it could be in government in April."
Finance Minister Arvils Aseradens (New Unity) noted that the budget developed by Rēzekne City Council has been received, but the Ministry of Finance has raised several issues: "The new budget has been received and the Stabilisation Council has presented a rather long list of questions to Rezekne City Council as to why the budget was drawn up in this way or otherwise. We need a fortnight or so to evaluate all the figures so that there are answers to all the questions and so on."
The government is expected to make a decision to dismiss Rezekne City Council as early as this month. It will then reach the Saeima.
