Budget two years shy of a billion

New policy initiatives in next year’s state budget will require the allocation of 546,884 million euros, Ministry of Finance spokesman Aleksis Jarockis told newswire BNS Tuesday.

The projected government ministry demands for 2017 are projected at 781.684 million euro, but by 2018 the size of the budget will have bloated to beyond a billion euros at 1.154 billion euros.

“Under current economic conditions, when the state budget’s ability to finance additional costs is limited, we’ve asked all sector ministries to be responsible in submitting their budget requests. Even now it’s clear that all demands will not be possible to meet. So already by August the Cabinet should collegially be taking a decision on what the state can afford in additional funding from next year’s budget – given the priorities in 2016: internal security; national defense; health and education if structural reforms are implemented; as well as pensions,” the ministry representative said.

The largest sums in additional funding have been requested by the Health (159.7m euros), Interior (122.7m euros) and Defense (68.5m) Ministries.

The estimated needs for additional funding in new policy initiatives were followed in size at the Transport (67.3m), Education and Science (51m), Welfare (28m), Culture (18.6m) ministries.

Among the ministries with the apparently smallest short-term future appetites were the Justice (5.1m), Environmental Protection and Regional Development (4.6m), Agriculture (4.2m), and the most exemplary Finance Ministry itself (1.4m euros).
