On Thursday, the party and its allied party within Development/For! will meet with Prime Minister Krišjānis Kariņš to agree on further collaboration in the government.
"We will continue working in Kariņš' government so that decisions in overcoming the pandemic will be based on science and health experts' opinion, not political conjuncture," said an announcement by For!.
Ilze Viņķele said that Pavļuts has been chosen for the position because of his crisis management skills. President Egils Levits expressed his support for the candidate.
However, Latvian Health and Social Care Workers Union (LVSADA) chair Valdis Keris said he did not think Pavļuts was the right candidate. He said Pavļuts had no experience in the health care sector and the current situation demands quick and professional action.
Daniels Pavļuts is currently a Saeima deputy and head of the faction Development/For!. He has formerly been Minister for Economics and State Secretary for Culture among other positions.
Current Health Minister Ilze Viņķele has been requested to resign by PM Kariņš.
Defense Minister Artis Pabriks will be made interim Health Minister to fulfill the duties until the official appointment of the new minister.
