Minister of Defense Raimonds Vējonis met with Russian Ambassador Alexander Veshnyakov on Thursday "to discuss expanded Russian military activity near the Latvian border," the Ministry said in a statement

Russian military activity promotes tensions along the border and undermines confidence, Vējonis said.

"Russian military activity near the Latvian border raises concern about the security situation in the region, particularly in the context of events in Ukraine."

The ambassador was asked to explain why ships and aircraft are consistently maneuvering just a few kilometers from Latvia's national borders.

The Minister called on the Russian side to be more open and use existing channels to allay any concerns about Russia's "aims and intentions" in the Baltic region.

"We want good neighborly relations and one of the prerequisites for a good relationship is the ability to talk openly about issues of concern," Vējonis said.
