Former Saeima deputy, US Latvian Inese Birzniece dies

On Thursday, October 27, lawyer and former Saeima deputy Inese Birzniece passed away at the age of 71, former politician Karina Pētersone told LETA.

Birzniece, born on May 25, 1951, was raised in the USA and headed the Latvian Association of Southern California from 1988 to 1990 and worked in the American Latvian Association.

She has been a member of the Saeima in three parliamentary terms. Before that, Birzniece worked both in the editorial of the newspaper “Atmoda” and in the press center of the Supreme Council of Latvia, where her written press releases in English formed the historical chronicle of the restoration of Latvian independence.

Birzniece has been a consultant in the Saeima's European Affairs Commission and as a permanent international expert has consulted politicians and public of the Eastern Partnership countries on European integration issues. In recent years, Birzniece worked in Moldova.
