Government gives extra €2m to Health Ministry

Take note – story published 9 years ago

Unwilling to support the earmarking of the €8.9m in additional budget funding requested by the Health Ministry Tuesday, the Cabinet of Ministers did approve about €2m in various allocations. However Prime Minister Laimdota Straujuma objected to Finance Ministry doubts over the complete funding request.

“I cannot agree with the Finance ministry,” said Straujuma, who is currently handling the Health Minister’s portfolio in addition to her own duties, “We agreed between the ministry and all the health organizations that €9.9m is the sum that is immediately essential for the sector.”

The premier added that at least €5.5m more should be diverted. She urged both ministries to coordinate a funding request within a week’s time.

The Cabinet’s hesitant procurements for the health care sector leave Straujuma well short of promises made previously to the Union of Health Care and Social Workers for the additional €9.9 pending budgetary allocations.
