The Saeima has decided to transfer the collective initiative “For a Unified Society without the Russian Union” to the Saeima National Security Commission for further evaluation, according to information from the Saeima on August 11.

The initiative has been signed by 10,168 residents, asking the Saeima for the cessation of the activities of the Latvian Russian Union as a political party.

According to the initiative, banning the political activities of the Latvian Russian Union will greatly diminish the capacity of the enemies of Latvia's statehood to divide the society, glorify the Russian armed forces, romanticize war, and spread the influence of Putin's regime in Latvia.

The changes adopted this summer in the Law on Political Parties stipulate that parties are prohibited from turning against the independence, territorial integrity of Latvia or other democratic states, and the violent modification of the State. When considering the initiative, Members shall have the power to forward it to the Prosecutor's Office, which may initiate court proceedings for the termination of the party.

The State Security Service continues to follow the activities of the Latvian Russian Union and has not yet recorded violations since the amendments to the Law on Political Parties, Deputy Chief of State Security Service Ēriks Cinkus said earlier.
