Introducing the Kariņš government

Take note – story published 5 years ago

It may only be two days old, but Latvia's new government is already showing that it is taking the power of online media seriously with the release of its first film.

A YouTube short titled Behind the scenes: establishment of the new government of Latvia does exactly what it describes, with pictures of journalists milling around the government building in their usual fashion, fresh flowers being deposited in vases and name plates being hastily changed on doors.

Then outgoing Prime Minister Māris Kučinskis can be seen passing on a few tips to his successor with airy hand gestures that speak volumes about the new-found freedom he will enjoy once someone else is in charge. He rounds off his tenure by banging a nail into a flagpole in time-honored fashion, a task he completes with considerable aplomb.

The visibly excited ministers then get to try out their new chairs for size and exchange handshakes with all and sundry before posing for the inevitable family photo.

It's only two minutes long and comes with English subtitles. It's all very uplifting and pleasant - let's hope it lasts!
