PM continues to urge vaccination, sensible New Year celebrations

Prime Minister Krišjānis Kariņš has once again urged anyone who has not yet been vaccinated to do so, and to get booster jabs, too.

In a government release December 28 he also called on the population to strictly observe the restrictions on gathering while waiting for the New Year.

The Prime Minister said that the information currently available on the new Omicron strain of coronavirus suggests that it is several times more contagious than the Delta strain which has recently become dominant and said vaccination will increase the body's resistance to infection with Omicron as well as other strains of Covid-19.

"I urge every citizen not to hesitate and go to receive a booster vaccine at a convenient place - in medical institutions, to a family doctor, applying for vaccination in advance, using the website manavakcina.lv or free phone 8989, or in a “live queue” at vaccination points, off-site vaccination sites or large vaccination centers, which are gradually being reopened. Invite your loved ones, friends and co-workers to do the same. The government has provided sufficient stocks of vaccines so that every inhabitant of Latvia can receive both primary and booster vaccination,” said Kariņš.

A booster dose is available three months after the second dose, and 2 months after the Johnson & Johnson vaccine.

The current state of emergency and a series of epidemiological precautionary measures will remain in place until 11 January 2022. No decision has yet been taken on whether to extend that period, with such a decision likely to depend upon the scale of the threat posed by Omicronin coming days.

Private gatherings are allowed of up to 10 people indoors and up to 20 people outdoors. However, the government did recently relax restrictions for New Year's Eve to allow people to stay up and see in the new year instead of closing bars and restaurants at 23:00. More information about security measures is available at covid19.gov.lv.
