PM Kariņš: Four-party coalition is still possible in Latvia

Take note – story published 1 year ago

Although the party association United List (AS) and the National Alliance (NA) have made it clear that they do not want the involvement of the Progressives in the next government, the coalition negotiator, current Prime Minister Krišjānis Kariņš (New Unity), believes that a four-party coalition is possible, Latvian Television reported October 19.

In the 'Rīta panorāma' morning program of LTV, Kariņš said that in coalition talks, topics like economy, education, the rule of law, and security, had already been negotiated and there is no contradiction between the four political forces.

Kariņš said that he still sees no reason why the JV, AS, NA and Progressives could not work together. The key is to agree on what these political forces can do together.

Currently, the vision differs, for example, on the ratification of the Istanbul Convention and on the regulation of civil union. The JV and Progressives are in the same mind and support it, but the other political forces are dismissive and so far the votes in the Saeima are not enough to support these regulations, but the situation may change in the future, said Kariņš.

According to him, this week, together with the partners of the potential coalition, he plans to go through all relevant issues in depth. By the end of the week, it will be clear whether there is a “sufficient base” to offer potential cooperation to any political forces.
