PM Kariņš has shown firm stance, says politics expert

The decision of Prime Minister Krišjānis Kariņš to request the resignation of Health Minister Ilze Viņķele shows the ability of the PM to take action, said political scientist Ilga Kreituse in an interview to Latvian Radio, January 6.

She said Kariņš' government was so unpopular that something had to change. Viņķele's determination to have the last word, differing statements from her and the Prime Minister created confusion in society - and consequently distrust in the government. Therefore, Kariņš' action was a logical step.

Kreituse predicted that the position of Kariņš would be strengthened, as he has shown his stance. According to the political scientist, Kariņš had to show that he has the capacity to act drastically, and it will now be clear that freedom and public consultation of internal government matters are not acceptable.

The party Development/For! has received a heavy blow, as this is already the second minister of their party to leave the government. Viņķele and former minister Juris Pūce were also the ones on whom the popularity of the party was based.

According to Kreituse's observations, Development/For! is now confused. This is also reflected in the reluctance of party member Defense Minister Artis Pabriks to take up the duties of Minister for Health. It is logical to take over the duties of a member of one's party, said Kreituse.
