The National Electronic Mass Media Council (NEPLP) ruled Thursday to support the creation of a third Latvian Public Television (LTV) channel, where content would be made in the Russian language and broadcast throughout the entire national territory. Also envisaged are “regional windows” for regional and local content broadcast specifically to the residents of eastern Latgale province.

NEPLP member Gints Grūbe told newswire BNS that the support proposal will be worked into plans for public commissioning projects to be submitted in the fall.

Grūbe added that the financing needed for the new channel will be presented to the government for next year’s budget planning.

“The NEPLP’s ruling means that such a national broadcasting channel is necessary, but that it is not physically possible to create it with existing funding,” LTV content spokesman Sergejs Ņesterovs told LSM.

Ņesterovs indicated that whether or not the channel is actually established will be in the hands of the politicians to whom the NEPLP makes its recommendations as an independent Saeima-appointed advisory body.
