MEP Valdis Dombrovskis will be offered a new position of Vice-President of the European Commission while jointly serving as Commissar of the newly-created Energy Union, according to unofficial information obtained by Latvian Radio Thursday.

However the former prime minister was quick to deny any such news today, telling national information agency LETA that the "rumor is not grounded in truth."

There are currently five vice-presidential posts on the European Commission.

As reported, at a meeting in Brussels over the weekend of August 30 EU heads of state agreed on the appointment of Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk as President of the European Council and of Italian Foreign Minister Federica Mogherini as the next High Representative for Foreign Affairs.

Commenting after Tusk's appointment Dombrovskis on Monday re-stated his hope that he could be awarded a portfolio with economic or financial responsibilities, but reminded the public that the vetting process is expected to take at least the remainder of the week.
