The letter expresses thanks for a previous letter Vejonis sent to Washington congratulating Trump on his election to the Oval Office.
"I appreciate very much the Latvian commitment to spending two percent of gross domestic product on defense, which creates a good example of burden-sharing between the allies. I also appreciate Latvian participation in security and anti-terrorism missions in Afghanistan and Iraq," said the US President's letter.
Trump then goes on to say: "Today I am proud to reaffirm that the United States will remain steadfast Latvian friend and ally," and expresses hopes of "strengthening economic cooperation".
He concludes on a light-hearted note. "As a New York Knicks fan, allow me to say how much I appreciate the investment in Latvian basketball star Kristaps Porziņģis," Trump quips, thanking Vejonis for his good wishes.
