Rinkēvičs: National security and civil protection top issues for 2024

In an interview with Latvian Television's “Morning Panorama” newscast on January 3, Latvian President Edgars Rinkēvičs outlined several things that should be accomplished nationally this year.

President Edgars Rinkēvičs would like to see a bigger breakthrough this year on a number of issues already outlined last year, including strengthening the eastern border, financing the interior system, promoting economic growth, and reducing bureaucracy.

“The first is our national security. That, truth be told, is no longer a goal, it is a process,“ the President said.

Construction of the eastern border should be completed this year, erecting a fence not only on the border with Belarus but also with Russia. Moreover, the border should also be strengthened from the point of view of military infrastructure.

The President also expects work in the implementation of the civil protection system. “Unfortunately, we are far from doing well there,” Rinkēvičs added. He stressed that funding for the home affairs system should grow faster in the 2025 budget.

The President also highlighted the need for concrete steps and investments to boost economic growth and the well-being of citizens. He also wants to see a general reduction of bureaucracy in Latvia.
