By taking on the patronage of the European Capital of Culture, the President will be obliged to promote both Liepāja and the whole region of Kurzeme.
On his visit to Liepāja on August 10, Rinkēvičs said: "[I am] one in the team that does everything to make Liepāja, as the European capital of culture, recognizable both in Latvia and outside its borders. It is absolutely clear that there is no way forward without practical state support here, and [I will] be a positive lobbyist in both parliament and government to some extent."
Liepāja will offer about 200 cultural events over the next four years as the capital of culture, the most vivid and substantial of which will be in 2027.
