Rinkēvičs mentioned that some of the European Union (EU) countries have “opinions” on the Ukraine issue, but stressed that the EU was ultimately able to agree on sanctions against Russia and support for Kyiv after the Russian re-invasion launched in February 2022.
“Interestingly enough, at this point, the EU is more divided when it comes to the Middle East, rather than to Ukraine,” the President noted.
He added that it was important for the West to provide support to both Ukraine and Israel, as both suffered attacks on “our values” and international order.
The President also reminded that many NATO Member States, unlike Latvia, have still not fulfilled their commitments to dedicate at least 2% of gross domestic product to defense.
Rinkēvičs said that if the world sees EU and Western failure in Ukraine, the pressure will increase on Israel as well. He added that Asian regions, including Taiwan, should not be forgotten.
The President has also pointed out that Russia is now transforming from an authoritarian state into a totalitarian state, and that Moscow's propaganda is even more dire at the moment than it was during the Cold War.
