President Egils Levits started a three-day state visit to Portugal April 12. Top of the agenda was a meeting with his Portuguese counterpart, President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa.

"Latvia and Portugal are located on opposite sides of the European continent, but we share the same responsibility to strengthen NATO," said Levits.

The President of Latvia emphasised that Latvia and Portugal were also linked by the European Capitals of Culture – in 2027, this title will be held by Evora in Portugal and Liepāja in Latvia. Cooperation between the two cities will open up new opportunities in both culture and tourism, Levits suggested. On Friday, in Evora, the mayors of the two cities will sign a memorandum of understanding on further cooperation.

Levits took the opportunity of his visit to president President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa with a high Latvian state award, the Commander of the Grand Cross of the Order of the Three Stars.

But the Latvian President won't walk away from Lisbon empty-handed, being awarded the status of an honorary citizen of Lisbon, which included a large golden key in a presentation case, during a meeting with the Mayor of Lisbon, Carlos Moedas.
