Latvian President Rinkēvičs visits Vatican

On Thursday, May 16, President of Latvia Edgars Rinkēvičs met with Pope Francis of the Roman Catholic Church in a private audience, said the Chancellery of the President of Latvia.

During his visit, Rinkēvičs also met with Cardinal Pietro Parolin, Secretary of State of the Holy See, and discussed cooperation between Latvia and the Catholic Church, as well as regional security and support for Ukraine in its fight against the aggressor.

Rinkēvičs underlined the good relations between Latvia and the Holy See and the regular dialogue between senior officials. At the same time, Rinkēvičs reaffirmed Latvia's support for Ukraine. "All necessary support should be given to Ukraine to enable it to defend itself against the aggressor and defeat it. We call on you to support the Ukrainian peace initiative," Rinkēvičs said.

Rinkēvičs called on the Holy See to play an active role in the return of Ukrainian children abducted by Russia from Russia, the territories of Ukraine temporarily occupied by Russia and Belarus.
