Latvian President supports declaring state of emergency

The President of Latvia, Egils Levits, told Latvian Radio November 4 that he agrees that the state of emergency in Latvia should be announced to limit the spread of COVID-19.

At the same time, compensatory mechanisms should be encouraged for those sectors whose activity will be affected, he said.

"(..) I would also like to call on every Minister to analyze in their respective field how it would be possible to limit transmitting this infection to people. We saw in the spring, if these restrictions are respected, then a couple of weeks later, a positive result was seen.

In any case, I believe that the state of emergency is necessary to make it possible for the government to adopt necessary measures.

Of course, the whole economy is suffering and every person is suffering, but the government will see compensatory measures for keeping employees and entrepreneurs afloat," the President of State said.
