Sporting a white shirt and red tie in the colors of the pre-Lukashenko era Belarusian flag which has become a symbol of resistance to the regime, Levits helped pass that flag from hand to hand beside the Freedom Monument and through the streets of central Rīga.
"I myself took part in the Baltic Way 31 years ago, and at that time we were well aware of and understood what it meant to have support from outside Latvia for our independence and democracy movement. I think it is our duty as a civil and free society to support the Belarusian people's demands for an independent, free and democratic Belarus. Our movement won at that time, and we hope that the democratic movement in Belarus will also achieve its goals," said Levits of the event, drawing direct parallels between events in Belarus right now and the events in the Baltic states more than three decades ago.
