President of Latvia says Viņķele's dismissal was a 'logical decision'

President Egils Levits told Latvian Television January 8 that the dismissal of Health Minister Ilze Viņķele was a 'logical decision' and a signal for other ministers to work as a team.

Levits said that Viņķele and Kariņš have long had different views in terms of reducing Covid-19 spread. “If a member of the team who has other ideas has to be fought for a long time, then logic demands to replace [the minister],” the President of Latvia said

The Prime Minister has acted adequately and decisively in the crisis, demanding the resignation of Health Minister, said Levits.

This, according to Levits, is a signal for the other members of the Cabinet to come together and work as one team, despite the fact that the members of the Government represent five different political forces.

At the same time, the President acknowledged that an increasingly pressing issue is the improvement of government communication with the public. “Yes, communication has been a problem so far,” the president said, adding that it is not enough to send a press release for any changes, but there should be a comprehensive explanation.

Speaking about the new Minister of Health, Daniels Pavļuts, the President of Latvia said that Pavluts was an experienced politician and was well qualified to perform the duties of Minister for Health.

Levits is planning to meet soon with the new health minister.
