Latvian Saeima issues statement reaffirming support for Ukraine

Ahead of next week's parliamentary summit of the International Crimea Platform in Rīga, the Saeima adopted another statement October 17 condemning Russia's aggression in Ukraine, expressing support for Ukraine's early integration into the European Union and NATO, and calling on allies to supply Ukraine with weapons and allow them to be used for targets in Russian territory.

In its statement, the Saeima reaffirmed Latvia's unwavering support for the sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity of Ukraine within its internationally recognized borders, noting that the de-occupation of the Crimean peninsula is an integral part of the process of ending the war and securing peace.

The Parliament statement also underlined that the International Crimea Platform is an important instrument for promoting international cooperation to counter Russian aggression as a global threat.

The Parliament pledged to play an active role in the implementation of the objectives of the International Crimea Platform by promoting the broadest possible international representation in it in order to strengthen support for Ukraine in its struggle for freedom.

The Latvian Parliament expressed its support for Ukraine's strategic goal of joining NATO and the European Union, and Latvia supports Ukraine's integration into the European Union and NATO as soon as possible.

The Parliament also advocates the establishment of a Special Tribunal for the crime of aggression against Ukraine, which would be legitimate, enjoy broad inter-regional support and thus ensure that senior Russian officials are held accountable.

The Saeima also called on allies to provide Ukraine with weapons, including medium and long-range missiles, and allow Ukraine to use them as and where it deems necessary for self-defense, including without limitation against legitimate military targets on Russian territory.

The Saeima also calls on states to ensure the confiscation and transfer of frozen Russian state assets to Ukraine as part of their counter-aggression measures.

The Saeima also calls on the international community to recognize as genocide the crimes committed by the Soviet authorities against the Ukrainian people and the Crimean Tatars, to join the objectives declared in the International Crimea Platform and the Ukraine Peace Initiative, to step up all forms of support for Ukraine in its defense against Russian aggression and in its struggle for de-occupation in order to restore and strengthen security and stability in Ukraine and throughout the region.
