Budget debate enters second day at Saeima

Debate over the form of Latvia's 2020 spending plans entered a second day November 14 following a marathon sitting November 13 that only managed to get a third of the way through the 29-item agenda.

Deputies were allowed to return home shortly after 11 p.m. following 14 hours of debate, but towards the end the mood of opposition members became angry as they objected to a reduction in the speaking time allotted to each speaker and the way they said the government was pusing legislation through without proper scrutiny.

Debate resumed at 9 a.m. November 14 and saw opposition members resuming their criticism with former Finance Minister Dana Reizniece-Ozola saying the government's communication strategy with regard to the budget had been deeply flawed.

The debate can be watched live online at the Saeima website. Another long day is in prospect.
