Jansons was elected with 68 votes over 24.
The other candidates, Welfare Ministry's parliamentary secretary Krišs Lipšāns and lawyer Edgars Zelderis, received 15 and 8 votes respectively.
Jansons, born in 1973, has been Latvia's ombudsman since March 17, 2011. Previously Jansons, a lawyer and economist by education, worked as the head of a health insurance company.
Deputies expressed support for Jansons saying he has paid attention to social injustice issues, discrimination of Latvians in labor market and cases regarding children's rights.
