Saeima speaker Edvards Smiltēns was on a visit to the Ukrainian parliament, the Verkhovna Rada, on January 12, with more meetings taking place January 13.

The delegation led by the Speaker of the Saeima arrived in Kyiv to express support and solidarity for the Ukrainian people. At the beginning of the visit, smiltēns met with the Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada, Ruslan Stefanchuk , who expressed his gratitude for Latvia's support to Ukraine and its people.

The Speaker of the Saeima addressed the members of the Verkhovna Rada in Ukrainian from the podium of the parliament, expressing his respect for the Ukrainian language, as well as for the people who, upon arriving in Latvia, started to learn the Latvian language from the first day.

"In fact, the Soviet Union is finally really collapsing just now. It is collapsing before our eyes on the battlefields of Ukraine and in our hearts, geopolitically and in human terms," said Smiltēns.

Russia had intentionally "opened the gates of hell" in Ukraine and "It is the duty of the entire civilized world to close these gates with joint efforts," said Smiltēns.

Smiltēns said that Latvia's political, military, financial, humanitarian and humanitarian support will continue. “No matter how much it costs and how long it takes. We and our partners say in one, clear and definite voice - we will not get tired," emphasized the Speaker of the Saeima.

Smiltēns was accompanied on his visit to Ukraine by the chairman of the Saeima Foreign Affairs Commission Rihards Kols, the chairman of the Defense, Internal Affairs and Corruption Prevention Commission Raimonds Bergmanis, the chairman of the European Affairs Commission Andris Spruds, as well as the head of the group of Saeima deputies for the promotion of cooperation with the Ukrainian parliament Jānis Skrastiņš.

The delegation is also meeting with other senior Ukrainian officials including President Zelenskyy.

With a scheduled Saeima sitting also taking place January 12, Saeima business was handled in Smiltēns' absence by his deputies.
