The Chairman of the Saeima Foreign Affairs Commission Rihards Kols (National Alliance) said that the Russian attack on Ukraine was also carried out from the territory of Belarus.
“Given that Belarus is thus grossly violating the general imperatives of international law, the Foreign Affairs Commission has previously expressed its view that it is necessary to take measures recognized by international law aimed at the cessation of these offenses and the full reimbursement of the infringements already committed,” said Kols.
He pointed out that Latvia has fulfilled its mutual obligations, as well as its international obligations, in good faith and continues to commit itself to act in accordance with the requirements of international law.
From October 10 this year, the Agreement between Latvia and Belarus on the simplification of journeys for residents of border areas, as well as the functioning of the Agreement on mutual assistance in customs matters and the Agreement on air traffic are suspended.
The agreements have been suspended until the Republic of Belarus has brought to end violations of international law with regard to Ukraine and will reimburse Ukraine in full for violations of international law already committed.
The changes will take effect on the day following the announcement.
