Man arrested in Rīga for glorifying Putin

State police have detained a young man born in 2002 for war crimes and praising Russian dictator Vladimir Putin, and the man has been placed in custody, police reported.

The criminal case was launched on March 28. The young man, in an aggressive tone, shouted a number of phrases praising war crimes and Putin in Russian, knowing that his words would be heard by Riga municipal police officers. The young man was under the influence of alcohol.

Officers placed him in a temporary detention facility. The next day, the young man was found to be a suspect and the State Police asked Riga City Court to impose a security measure on him, an arrest. The man has no previous criminal record.

Criminal proceedings have been initiated for public glorification, acquittal or gross denial of genocide, crime against humanity, crimes against peace, or war crimes (Section 74.1, Paragraph one of the Criminal Law).

Such a crime shall be punishable by deprivation of liberty for a period of up to five years or temporary deprivation of liberty, or by probation supervision, or by community service, or by a fine.
