Man accused of arson in Rīga, Grīziņkalns

The State Police (VP) has urged the prosecutor's office to prosecute a man accused of arson in Grīziņkalns, Rīga, VP said October 4.

The investigation revealed that the man arrested in Ventspils had been involved in two criminal proceedings for fires in Riga, Zvaigžņu Street and Laboratorijas Street.

On May 9 at around 20.00, information was received that two apartments in an apartment building on Zvaigžņu Street were on fire. A short time later, information was received that a fire had also broken out in a nearby apartment building on Laboratorijas Street. 

During the investigation, it was established that the same alleged perpetrator was involved in both criminal proceedings. On May 10, a man born in 1981 was detained by the VP in Ventspils. An urgent search was carried out at the man's residence, which led to additional evidence of the alleged perpetrator's involvement in the arson.

The man has previous convictions for property and violent offenses.

On May 12, the court remanded the man in custody.

On September 27, the criminal proceedings were handed over to the prosecutor's office for prosecution.
