Filejs has been given a year-long probation period. The judgment may be appealed.
On June 17, 2019 - the day of remembrance of the occupation of the Republic of Latvia - the accused posted a “happy festival” greeting on his social network Facebook profile. In the assessment of the State Security Service (VDD), the person in the published entry, selectively selecting and interpreting historical developments in his own interests, denied the occupation of Latvia by the USSR on June 17 1940 and interpreted this tragic event as beneficial to the people and state of Latvia.
For public glorification, denial, justification, and gross demeaning of the war crimes of the USSR against Latvia and its inhabitants, the Law provides for imprisonment of up to five years, community service, or a fine.
