KNAB: Bartaševičs, iespējams, izpaudis neizpaužamas ziņas

Corruption cops pay visit to Rēzekne City Council

Representatives of the Corruption Prevention and Combating Bureau (KNAB) visited the city council of Rēzekne on Tuesday, February 6, and “implemented criminal procedural activities, including searches and interrogations,” KNAB confirmed to Latvian Television February 7.

The KNAB investigates a possibility that Aleksandrs Bartaševics (Together for Latvia), the suspended chairman of Rēzekne City Council, has disclosed classified information.

The KNAB suspects that Bartaševičs led by personal motives, instructed a local government employee to obtain information from the database available for their performance of duties. The employee passed the information to the currently suspended mayor, who disclosed the information to a family member for personal use, the KNAB said.

Margarita Voiciša, Head of Central Administration of Rēzekne Local Government, told LTV: “Officials of KNAB arrived in the local government yesterday. Necessary documents were issued, but no further comment can be made, of course, in accordance with the instructions of the competent authority.”

The KNAB commenced the relevant criminal proceedings on December 20, 2023.

Disclosure of classified information that is not confidential, secret, or top secret information, if it has been performed by a public official, shall be punishable by deprivation of liberty for a period of up to one year or temporary deprivation of liberty, or by probation supervision, or community service, or a fine.

Coercive measures related to deprivation of liberty have not been applied to any person in this process.

KNAB continues its pre-trial investigation.
