In connection with the incident, criminal proceedings were initiated for acts aimed at inciting national, ethnic, racial or religious hatred or hatred, as well as for intentional destruction or damage of other people's property.
On Friday, April 5, the State Police received a call from an eyewitness on Krišjāņa Barona Street, where a man was tearing down a Ukrainian flag hanging on a building while another man was filming him. After the act, they immediately left the scene.
Police officers identified the two alleged perpetrators and arrested them on Tuesday, April 9. The detainees have no previous convictions.
During searches at the addresses belonging to the persons, police officers found a face mask allegedly used in the commission of the crime, a walkie-talkie, as well as various objects with a glorifying meaning of the Communist regime and the Russian state.
On Thursday, 11 April, a decision will be taken on whether to remand the suspects in custody.
The State Police drew attention to the fact that at a time when Russia has been waging a brutal war against Ukraine for several years, any support for the aggressor state or glorification of its symbolism is unacceptable, and the police will do everything possible to ensure that such persons are brought to justice as provided for by law.
