Pressure on Latvia's border with Belarus rises to record level

On Sunday, September 10, 256 people tried to cross the Latvian-Belarusian border illegally, which is the largest number of border violators ever detected during a 24-hour period, according to data from the State Border Guard.

Previously, the largest ever number of border violators was recorded last Thursday, September 7, when 173 people tried to illegally enter Latvia from Belarus with the help of Alxander Lukashenko's state-sponsored international people smuggling operation.

On Friday, September 8, 115 people tried to enter Latvia illegally, and on Saturday, September 9, 101 people tried their luck.

The head of the state border guard, Guntis Pujāts, previously admitted that in connection with the border violators sent by Belarus, Latvia is currently nominated as a target country and the situation on our borders is the most difficult.

LTV reported that Lithuania had offered to send around 20 border officers to help out in Latvia.

The criminal regime in Minsk has a long history of switching the target of its cynical and heartless human trafficking between Poland, Lithuania and Latvia.

A total of 7,856 people have been prevented from illegally crossing the Latvian state border this year, according to the data of the border guard. Due to humanitarian reasons, a total of 318 people have been admitted to Latvia so far this year.

Separately, the State Border Guard said September 11 that in order to reduce the risks of human trafficking for Ukrainian nationals, border guards are intensifying immigration control measures to identify potentially affected persons. During the weekend, 618 persons and 269 vehicles were checked. Enhanced checks have been in place for some time.
