Illegal migrant group caught in Baldone, Latvia

Border guards, while inspecting information about suspicious individuals, detained a group of 12 on the grounds of Baldone sanatorium on Monday, May 13. 11 Indian citizens and one Pakistani citizen had  crossed the Latvian-Belarusian border illegally, the border Guard told the media in a statement.

The persons have been detained and placed in the accommodation center “Daugavpils”.

Deputy Chief of the State border Guard General Ivars Ruskulis told Latvian Radio that further expulsion of these persons from Latvia will take place unless they request asylum.

Ruskulis also said that clearing all the circumstances is difficult because detainees do not speak English or any other European language familiar to border officials, so an interpreter must be attached.

Last October, amendments to the Criminal Law came into force, which provide for harsher penalties for the illegal movement of persons across the State border and the organization and conduct of other criminal activities related to illegal migration to Latvia. The new amendments also provide for lengthy imprisonment.
