More suspected drug dealers detained in Rīga, Latvia

In recent weeks, State Police, in cooperation with colleagues from other departments, have seized large quantities of narcotic substances from drug dealers. Residents of Jaunciems and Sarkandaugava were detained for drug dealing, police said October 14.

On September 24, law enforcement officers of the State Police Riga Regional Headquarters Response Bureau stopped a car driver in Riga, Brīvības Street, for exceeding the speed limit. The driver's behavior indicated that he might be under the influence of drugs.

On checking the car, the law enforcement officers found that it contained narcotic substances. In total, seven polythene bags containing whole and half crushed pills of different colors, one polythene bag containing a brown granular substance (possibly crushed MDMA), 20 bags containing a white powdery substance (possibly cocaine, approximately 20 g in total), four bags containing cannabis (approximately 20 g in total), as well as € 2020 in cash, possibly obtained by criminal means, were found.

The law enforcement officers of the Riga North Directorate of the Riga Regional Directorate of the State Police were called to the scene and took the driver of the car, born in 2002, to the police headquarters for further action.

The police searched the person's residence in Jaunciems, where they found and seized another bag containing a white powdery substance, possibly cocaine.

During the investigation, it was established that the suspect had been dealing drugs in the city of Riga, as well as in the surrounding area. The drugs were sold via the Telegram application.

On October 2 this year, while carrying out operational activities in another criminal proceeding related to drug trafficking in Riga, law enforcement officers of the Riga Regional Directorate of the State Police detained four more persons who could be connected with drug trafficking. In particular, the law enforcement officers intercepted a car containing four persons (three men and one woman) against whom criminal proceedings had been initiated.

Among them was a drug dealer, a resident of Sarkandaugava, born in 1986. He has been convicted several times for drug dealing and has spent more than 10 years in prison.

In cooperation with the State Revenue Service Customs Department's canine unit, a search was carried out at his residence and garage, where about 450 grams of amphetamine were found, as well as an electric scooter, which had been wanted as stolen.

Criminal proceedings have been initiated in both cases and the exact qualification of the crimes will be decided after the results of the expert examination, when the composition and weight of the seized substances will be known.

In both criminal proceedings, the drug dealers, born in 2002 and 1986, have been remanded in custody.
