All suspects found in 2019 murder case in Saulkrasti, Latvia

Two people were detained in Ukraine at the end of January this year on suspicion of kidnapping and killing a Belarusian citizen in 2019 in Latvia, Saulkrasti municipality, the State Police (VP) reported February 16. Two Russian citizens were already detained by the VP in 2022.

In 2019, a group in Saulkrasti kidnapped a Belarusian citizen for financial gain and then murdered her. Two other suspects were detained in Ukraine at the end of January this year, thanks to successful cooperation with the Ukrainian Police.

On October 3, 2019, a citizen of the Republic of Belarus, born in 1979, went missing in Saulkrasti. Law enforcement promulgated the woman in search and launched large-scale investigative actions and determined that a criminal offence had been committed against the missing person. Officers determined that a group of individuals had previously planned to commit a crime against the woman.

In the run-up to the kidnapping, these persons, namely two Russian citizens living in Latvia, also involved three Ukrainian citizens in the crime.

Information was obtained during the investigation that the woman was kidnapped for financial gain – to obtain a complex of apartment buildings belonging to her. One of the criminals pretended to be a potential apartment buyer and arranged a meeting with the owner, and she was kidnapped during the meeting.

The woman was held in captivity after the kidnapping, but the criminals' plan to acquire the properties she owned failed, so they killed the woman.

Two suspected Ukrainian citizens were detained by Ukraine's National Police on January 29 and 30, 2024, but another accomplice has already died.

Consequently, all the suspects in the present case have been detained.
